TRUE NORTH INSULATION | SHOP & METAL BUILDINGS

Shop, Pole Barn & Metal Building Insulation in Kalispell & the Flathead Valley, MT

A metal building in Montana has two problems, and heat is only the first one. The second is condensation, because warm interior air hitting a cold steel panel produces water, and that water drips on whatever is stored below it and rusts the panels it forms on. Closed cell spray foam solves both at once, which is why it is what we install in nearly every shop, pole barn and steel building we work on across the Flathead Valley and the wider region.

Spray foam insulation for a shop or metal building by True North Insulation
WHY CLOSED CELL FOAM

Why Spray Foam Is the Right Material Here

Closed cell spray foam is widely considered the best insulation for pole barns and shops because it creates a complete, airtight seal that traditional materials cannot match. Applied as a liquid, it expands to fill every crack and crevice, stopping drafts and making the building significantly cheaper to heat or cool year-round. That efficiency is reinforced by its thermal resistance of roughly R-7 per inch, which saves valuable wall space compared to bulky fiberglass batts, and in a post-frame building where cavity depth is limited that matters.

BUILT FOR MONTANA SHOPS

Benefits for Montana Shops and Pole Barns

It stops the sweating

The cured foam acts as a built-in vapor barrier that blocks moisture, protecting steel panels and stored equipment from rust and rot. This alone is the reason many owners call us.

It makes the building heatable

An airtight envelope means a shop heater can actually hold a working temperature through a January cold snap instead of running continuously.

It adds structural strength

Dense closed cell foam bonds tightly to the framing, adding rigidity and racking strength that helps a pole barn withstand high winds and heavy snow loads.

It keeps pests out

The hardened barrier removes the entry points mice and wasps use, which is a persistent problem in agricultural and rural buildings.

It quiets the building

The foam absorbs outside noise and dampens the drumming that rain and hail produce on an uninsulated metal roof.

NEW CONSTRUCTION & RETROFIT

Buildings We Insulate

Post-frame pole barns, steel and metal buildings, residential shops and detached garages, equipment and machine storage, hangars, RV and boat storage, agricultural buildings, and commercial and light industrial steel structures. We handle both new construction and retrofit, including buildings that were built uninsulated and are now being converted to heated space.

Shops & Detached Garages

Insulation for working spaces, garages and workshops where temperature control and condensation matter.

Agricultural Buildings

Insulation options for equipment storage, barns and rural structures used throughout the region.

Metal & Steel Buildings

Building-envelope solutions for metal panels and steel-frame structures, including existing buildings being converted to heated space.

FROM SITE VISIT TO WALKTHROUGH

Our Shop and Pole Barn Process

01

Site visit.

We measure the building, look at the framing and panel condition, and discuss how the space will actually be used and heated.

02

Specification.

Thickness is set against your heating goals, and we identify which surfaces need coverage. Roof decks are almost always included.

03

Preparation.

Stored items are moved or covered, and surfaces are checked for the moisture and cleanliness the foam needs to bond.

04

Application.

Foam is applied to walls and roof deck in controlled lifts to the specified depth.

05

Thermal barrier coating.

Where the foam will remain exposed, which is typical in a shop, we apply a certified intumescent coating that satisfies the code requirement without drywall.

06

Cleanup and walkthrough.

The building is left clean and we review the completed work with you.

EXPERIENCE WITH METAL BUILDINGS

Why Choose True North for Shop and Pole Barn Insulation

Metal buildings are unforgiving of poor application, because the substrate temperature affects how the foam cures and bonding to steel requires the mix to be right. We have been spraying shops and pole barns in this valley for over fifteen years, we run calibrated equipment, and we handle the thermal barrier coating in the same scope rather than leaving you to sort it out.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Shop & Pole Barn Insulation FAQ

Will spray foam stop my metal building from sweating?

Yes, and that is one of its main advantages. Closed cell foam bonded directly to the panel means warm interior air never reaches the cold steel surface where condensation forms.

Can you spray directly onto metal panels?

Yes. Closed cell foam bonds well to steel provided the surface is clean, dry and at an appropriate temperature, which we verify before starting.

Do I need drywall over the foam?

Not necessarily. Building codes require a fifteen-minute thermal barrier, and a certified intumescent coating is an approved equivalent to half-inch drywall, which lets the foam stay exposed in an open shop.

How thick should it be?

It depends on whether you are heating the building continuously, occasionally, or just trying to stop condensation. We set thickness against how you actually use the space.

Can you insulate a building that is already full of equipment?

Usually. We will need working clearance at the walls, and anything that cannot be moved gets covered and protected.

Does it work on an existing uninsulated pole barn?

Yes, retrofit is common. The main requirement is access to the walls and roof deck.
