TRUE NORTH INSULATION | KALISPELL, MT

Spray Foam Insulation in Kalispell, Montana

Kalispell is the county seat of Flathead County and the economic center of the valley, with roughly 24,500 residents inside the city limits and a regional population closer to 140,000.

It is also where the widest range of building ages sits side by side, which is why the insulation work we do here varies more than anywhere else we operate. A 1950s house near the downtown core and a new build out toward the edge of town need completely different approaches, and the mistake we see most often is applying the same package to both.

What Kalispell Winters Ask of a Building

Four-Season Protection

Effective insulation needs to perform through prolonged winter cold, not just an occasional extreme temperature.

Kalispell sits west of the Continental Divide with a true four-season continental climate. Winter runs long, from November through March, delivering around 56 inches of valley snow with average highs in the low 30s. Spring arrives as a short volatile transition, summer is brief and spectacular with July and August highs in the 80s and low humidity, and autumn drops temperature quickly through September and October before winter resets.

The stretch that matters for an insulation specification is the extended run of sub-freezing weeks rather than the coldest single night. A building envelope that leaks air performs worst exactly when the outdoor temperature is furthest from the indoor temperature, because the pressure difference driving the leakage is largest then.

LOCAL BUILDING KNOWLEDGE

Housing in Kalispell

Kalispell carries the most varied inventory in the valley. Older homes near the core, many built well before attic air sealing was standard practice, sit alongside mid-century ranches, 1970s and 1980s subdivisions, and a substantial volume of newer construction driven by regional growth.

That variety drives what we get called for. On the older end, we are usually addressing attics that carry a fraction of current recommendations, uninsulated rim joists, and vented crawl spaces making the floors above them cold.

On the newer end, we are working with builders at the specification stage on whole-envelope packages. Both are common here and neither is unusual.

PERFORMANCE & COMPLIANCE

What Montana Code Requires

Insulation requirements vary by building assembly, project scope and applicable code. Walls, ceilings, floors and crawl spaces each need to be evaluated as part of the building's overall thermal envelope.

Traditional batt insulation, exterior rigid foam board and full or hybrid spray foam systems can all be considered depending on the construction. Which route makes sense depends on the build, and we will lay out the options during the estimate.

Not Every Building Needs the Same Package

Our recommendations depend on the building, the application and the performance goals. Contact our team to discuss the right insulation approach for your property.
